Data Center Decommissioning
Decommissioning is an important part of managing ongoing systems refreshes and data center updates. Successful decommissioning, whether it involves equipment replacement or whole-center shutdown, requires effective project management. GCI’s team helps maximize the return value of decommissioned equipment, ensures secure and responsible asset disposition while minimizing operational disruption, and provides a thorough and accurate inventory audit.
TYPES OF DATA CENTER DECOMMISSIONING PROJECTS:
- Decommissioning of obsolete equipment
- Shutdown/Relocation of corporate data centers
EQUIPMENT DECOMMISSIONING
Given the ever-growing demand for data and media storage devices and the fast pace of industry innovation, decommissioning old or obsolete equipment is a big part of data center management. The continual introduction of more energy-efficient servers and other advanced tech means that sometimes it’s more operationally advantageous to replace assets even before they reach EOL.
CENTER SHUTDOWN
As nearly every corner of the globe is brought online, the amount of data being generated each day is staggering, and only projected to grow. More tech users require more data storage capacity, and a greater need for data security as our lives are increasingly documented online. While the industry innovates in order to keep up, corporate data centers are also transitioning. In many cases, in-house operations are taking advantage of the benefits of cloud storage, rendering fixed data centers obsolete. Whether consolidating, co-locating, switching to micro-modular (containerized) data centers or undergoing permanent shutdown, decommissioning is a progressively important part of data management.
Decommissioning Project Management
The logistical considerations of a decommissioning project can be overwhelming, particularly when environmental and security compliance standards must be met. Our experienced team of professionals will help guide you through the process, ensuring all necessary steps are taken before, during, and after the physical removal of assets.
IT STARTS WITH A PLAN
Our decommission team will set accurate timelines and delineate responsibilities.
ASSET INVENTORY
Creating/validating an asset inventory is the first step toward disposition. From there, assets can be separated according to whether they will be retained, remarketed, or destroyed and recycled. Any associated licensing or maintenance contracts should be renegotiated or terminated.
CHAIN OF CUSTODY
Before equipment is unracked/disassembled, asset tags are attached to provide secure tracking from the data center to our facility.
MOBILE ONSITE DATA DESTRUCTION
Any sensitive data that cannot leave the site will be erased according to NIST 800-88 standards, or the storage device physically crushed, pulverized or shredded.
PACKING & SHIPPING
Assets categorized for offsite processing will be securely packaged, and our fully- insured transport vehicles will move them to our facility.
REMARKETING
Refurbished assets will be sold to our global customer base. We have many established relationships in the secondary market and resell hardware every day, helping maximize your asset value.
ENVIRONMENTALLY COMPLIANT RECYCLING
As an R2/RIOS certified company, we follow the strictest standards of equipment and materials management. With our commitment to environmentally-sustainable IT asset disposition, GCI complies with and exceeds all EPA guidelines and standards.
